Turf Care Tidbits
Besides mowing (mow high!), there are a number of weed issues to take care of at this time of the year. Both premergence and postemergence herbicides can be used while soil temperatures climb and the weather is mild.

Early Season Apple Care
Fire blight, cedar apple rust, and apple scab can infect your apple trees this spring. UK has a number of scouting guides to help you identify and treat diseases and insects that affect your home-grown fruit. The images are very good and can help you with your disease and insect management.

Fire Ants
Fire ant mounds are unusually large, are composed of fluffy soil, and rarely have a hole at the top.
They have been in counties just to the south and east of Pulaski (McCreary and Whitley).
If you see a suspected mound of fire ants, contact the Pulaski County Extension office at 606-679-6361.

Gall-y, Maple Galls Are Weird
Various growths sometimes appear on maple leaves. And they have fascinating names like maple bladdergall (pictured) or maple spindle gall or eyespot midge gall.
If you click the picture, you’ll be taken to the BYGL. It’s a terrific resource for plants, plant pathogens, or plant pests.

Pine Straw — One Hazard to Remember
Pine straw is a very combustible material. If smokers will be around the pine straw, be sure they don’t throw cigarette butts in the mulch. Provide a bucket of sand for them to deposit their cigarette butts into.
