As your perennials start to emerge, give them a little love by applying a granular, low-nitrogen fertilizer around the plants. this will give them the jump-start they need. |
Transplants of cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower can be planted outside in early April. Seed potatoes and onion sets should be planted in April. |
DO NOT CUT BACK foliage of bulbs (daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, etc) until they naturally wither & die. Plant other plants to hide the dying foliage. |
Asparagus and rhubarb harvests will begin this month. Give asparagus 3 years before a full harvest. Rhubarb can be harvested in year 2. |
Spring-blooming shrubs should be pruned after they finish blooming. Some of these include forsythia, lilac, flowering quince, magnolias, and witch hazels. |
As soon as the weather breaks, get your houseplants outside as they probably need a nice soaking rain. Be sure to not put them in full sun on day 1, but over the course of a couple weeks, gradually move them from shade to full sun (if they’re a full-sun plant). |
Keep sowing seeds of radishes, peas, spinach, kale, lettuce, and other greens in April outside. They can take the cool/cold temperatures of April. Remember to keep them watered! These can be planted successively every week or two. |
The mowers will start up this month. Be sure to cut your tall fescue high (3.5 to 4”) — this will discourage crabgrass seedlings. And sharpen the blade!! |
