New USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

USDA has issued the latest Plant Hardiness Zone (PHZM) map based on the previous 30 years of data. The majority of Kentucky is now in Zone 7, with northern and eastern Kentucky still well in Zone 6.

Understand, these maps are human constructs we’ve put plants in. Plant hardiness is much more complex than saying ‘Now I can fill my yard with all the Zone 7 plants I’ve been envying’. No. Take a step back.

The USDA PHZM is one of the best tools we have to make good, data-driven decisions on what plants will survive in a particular area.  The maps correctly reflect the temperature data over the last 30 years. But read more about it and you’ll see how the map was made and why it’s not infallible.

Spotted Lanternfly Winter Identification

Spotted lanternfly is the newest invasive insect that has come to Kentucky. The life stage you will see at this time of the year is the egg stage. Eggs look like an epoxy-like substance. They can be laid on tree bark but may also be found on unnatural objects like cars, patio furniture, firewood, and even stones.

Come by the Pulaski Co Extension office and pick up credit card-sized ID and info cards.

Although sold as Christmas cactus, you may have bought a Thanksgiving cactus. It’s OK….they’re both beautiful. Enjoy!

Master Gardener Updates

Ten Extension Master Gardener Trainees are finishing up their classroom training and will be putting in 40 hours each of volunteer time during the next 12 months through Master Gardener and Extension Service programs.

You’ll see these volunteers working in community beautification projects, manning tables at various events, or teaching programs.

The 2024 Native Plant Sales are going to bookend the 2nd Annual Kristy’s Home Tweet Home Birdhouse Contest, which will be a week-long event.
